Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942. On September 11, 1946, James Marshall Hendrix became Jimi's official name. Jimi formed The Experience with Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. The group released their first single, Hey Joe, on December 13, 1966. In May of 1967, the group released their first album, Are you experienced? Jimi Hendrix died on September 18 1970.
Jimi Hendrix expanded the range and vocabulary of the electric guitar into areas no musician had ever ventured before. Many would claim him to be the greatest guitarist ever to pick up the instrument. At the very least his creative drive, technical ability and painterly application of such effects as wah-wah and distortion forever transformed the sound of rock and roll. Hendrix helped usher in the age of psychedelia with his 1967 debut, Are You Experienced?, and the impact of his brief but meteoric career on popular music continues to be felt.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded three landmark albums - Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland - in a year and a half.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second 1967 album, Axis: Bold as Love continued the style established by Are You Experienced, but showcased a profound sense of melody along with his well-known technical virtuosity with tracks such as "Little Wing" and "If 6 Was 9".
A mishap almost prevented the album's release: Hendrix lost the master tape of side 1 of the LP, leaving it in the back seat of a New York City taxi.

Hendrix was also somewhat disappointed with the album's cover art. Although he appreciated the symbolic design, he had requested cover art that showcased his "Indian" heritage. The British art designers who created the cover assumed that he meant India the South Asian country, not Native Americans in the United States, and thus created cover art that depicts Hendrix and his Experience bandmates as the Vedic deities Durga and Vishnu.
