Some more of austin trip photos

Some more of portriats in the car while retirnung from the Austin. Pictured here are Homarjun and Razesh Pilla

Return from Austin Photo Blog

This is funny, we went to austin, made sure we had the camera, battery, and charger. And a spare set of batteries. AND We didnt take any pictures IN Austin. Great !!

Well, for the records, We all met at Shalimar and criticised crappy food (we couldnt eat it). The highlights are 2 hours of Sumit's time wasted in waiting for us while Abhishek was driving round and round on Ashish's confused directions. There is some more spice to that journey from ashish's home to shalimar and why we became late, but that is classified.

KB helped Jaggi with his apartment setup. Period. (Do I need say more? )

This [below] is the best smile I could from KB, after two days of tiresom weekend that went in driving and shopping , driving,..and driving.

Well, after food, we went to Clicks Billiards and enjoyed pool games, highlights of which are chatru's horrondous r-a-p-e by abhishek, and awesom shots courtesey Mr. Pilla.

The later part of the nights saw some serious car search by pilla and abhishek, and some serious discussion on India and Indians by three tipsy men Homarjun Ashish and Gaurav (Gola). The rest is left to your imigination.

The much of next evening was spent in test driving mercs and bimmers and acuras, and
serious paper napkins purchases at Walmart super centers and later the crowd went to watch the branbdnew BMW Z4 at Sumit's. Homarjun Gola and Ahsish were found enjoying Chat type food at Swaad India, who were later joined by Vishv Jeet and Ravi. This group later visited mozart cofee, didnt drink cofee, and heded to Trudy's for their famous matrini. We once again forgot our way to the Trudy's ( courtesey Mr. Ravi , who lives in Austin since 2002, A batchmate of Ashish, yes, same ashsih who forgot the way to Shalimar while on Lamar street. FYI, Shalimar is on Lamar st.) . As if it was not enough, on Homarjun's insisting, we all stopped at Cold Stone cream-ry for delicious Pecan Vanilla Passion.

Anyways, the trip ended with this and some of the photos embdded in this blog, were taken in the car during the return journey.

Capturing the graduate life in the summer through the eyes of camera

I floated the idea of a photo shoot of the life in summer of 2006. Abhishek and Karambir enthusiastically accepted the idea and the journey began.

Let me describe our lives a little. This summer has been a little different. We have very few friends because almost everybody we knew has graduated. The different has been brought about by two people, namely Razesh Pilla, and Karambir Kalsi.

Neither me nor Abhishek are a typical PhD student submerged in studies. We work, but at the same time, prefer to have some life. Some of the pastimes we have are Football, Cooking, Pool, liquor on some nights, along with occasional (or more than occasional :-) ) pool games. Cooking is one the things I enjoy, and I choose to believe that same is the case with Karambir and Abhishek.

On a pleasant note, this summer has been enjoyed a lot. So with this summer ending, we would like to capture it with the eyes of the lens. Today Karambir and I have taken a few pictures before the soccer games. Some of them are posted here. We are not very happy with the results. Will try to improvise on them. May be you will see the improvement in the coming posts.

Soccer Skills

BambiBall - Girl's handling of the ball is awesome

Get there in time.

There were not many highlights of the game today, except for the fact that Mr. Chandan showed up in his usual attire (yes yes, jeans, casual leather boots and full sleeve tucked in shirt).

Today, we reached late by some 40 mins, and the game was already started. Atleast I could not do much of warm up, and had to take Gagan as soon as I entered the game. That first stretched was enough to get me tired for the rest of the game. Today there were just too many players in the field, it was hard to play. The game was so sluggish that Karambir got furst (in Ravi's language) and started firing at the fall from end to end. I had fun watching some good kicks flying from our end....to the far end of the other side.

I can still feel Greg's hard kick that I took on my stomuch. I kept wondering how could someone get enough time to dribble, plan, and then kick it too, in the amount of time so short that I couldnt even turn away !! Either I am too slow, or Greg is just too fast (I prefer to belive the latter)

Overall, the game today was less fun than usual, but I think the lesson learnt is valuable. Get there in time !! Mr. Razesh Pilla, are you reading ???

Satark Nagrik Sangathan

I just picked this one up from Satark Nagrik Sangathan: Good Work

Cleaning Delhi the RTI way

“Please withdraw the RTI application you have filed, we promise to fix all the sanitation related problems in Sheikh Sarai”, said the exasperated MCD Sanitation Inspector to the volunteers of SNS who had filed an RTI application in the MCD when residents of Sheikh Sarai complained in SNS meetings about the non-performance of duties by MCD sweepers. The application sought the names of the Sanitation Inspector and sweepers responsible for cleaning the area and a copy of the attendance register of the sweepers. As soon as the application was filed, employees of the sanitation department of the MCD started contacting SNS workers asking them the reason for seeking the information and attempting to persuade them to withdraw the application.“A simple application has caused panic in the department, clearly the ‘Lahori system’ is prevalent in Sheikh Sarai as well” says a resident of the area. ‘Lahori system’ is a term coined for the process wherein MCD sweepers give 50% of their salaries to the Sanitation Inspector responsible for taking their daily attendance in exchange for the Inspector marking them present (without them having to show up for work). The MCD sweepers then take up other jobs in the private sector and the colonies assigned to them remain un-swept and filthy.Encouraged by the fact that merely asking for the attendance register of the sweepers is eliciting such a response from the MCD employees who are notorious for not listening to pleas of the people, the residents of Sheikh Sarai have started maintaining a parallel attendance register for the sweepers. They ask for the monthly attendance register maintained by the department and compare the two registers. This has exerted such tremendous pressure on the sweepers that they have started turning up for work regularly and cleaning up the area.“This experience has established that if citizens exercise their right to information, they can gradually bring about a revolutionary change in their surroundings and localities”, says Vinita, a member of SNS.

Rain or No Rain, we gotto play !!

Just as we were about to hit the soccer grounds at around 7pm today, it started pouring. It was really heavy rain and we thought we wouldnt play today. Anyhow, we parked our cars besides the ground. We were the first ones to get there. It was raining heavily that neither KaramBir nor Me dared to come out.

Few minutes passed by, no signs of rain to stop or slow down. Suddenly I got a call from Karan, who sounded happy because its raining today.

I picked up Karan, with 2 more of his freinds. He got out immediately with his friends immediately. Initially it felt very cold, but we kept playing. Once drenched, I actualy started enjoying it. Later, we were joined few more people and we played for full hour in the rain.

It was fun. Seems, nothings gonna stop us from playing.

Sudoku

Sudoku has been one of my latest pastime. Started playing around 1 month from now.
I credit this to my bhabhi who introduced this to me during my India visit this year. Originaly, I was introduced to Sudoku by one of my labmates Gopal, and finally I got into it.

Initially when I started solving it, i could solve the easy ones in about 14 to 18 mins. Today, I solved an easy one in under 5 mins. I find sudoku very addictive. I solve atleast one Sudoku puzzzle in a day. Just feels good

I play sudoku at http://websudoku.com, if you want to give it a try.

Soccer Mania

Soccer world cup 2006 have proved to be a boon for me. This is the year that I started playing soccer. Thanks to friends like Karambir, Abhishek and Gregory for their bearing with me and coaching me with a lot of patience.

It all started on 20th July 2006, when I returned from India. Abhishek and Karambir were both really into soccer playing with full enthusiasm. I also joined and found myself totally unfit for this sport. I didnt not know the rules of the game and had never played it before. Everybody else was a good player, atleast knew the rules.

Anyways, on encouragement from all these people, I bought the gear and started learning. Abhishek and karambir were my technical gurus, who taught me how to hit the ball (Here it is important to mention that I still cant hit a hard kick, nor can I dribble). Gregory on the other hand, has been the stragetic mentor. He does not tell how to kick, but tell the game, how to play, and he is rather soft on my mistakes as compared to his treatment to others. I guess thats because I am a friend, and a novice friend.

I recall the first day, when I could not trouch a ball coming to me and it went from under my feet. Another occasion, on my first day, I could not pass the ball on to the next player and the smart opponent easily converted it into a goal. I play defender (thats the easiest for me I guess), and I remember, on the first day, I was outrun by each and every player.

Due to constant mentoring and coaching, today, I am not ashamed of my game, if not proud. I have now developed the interest, and hope to enjoy it as much as I can.

Also, honestly, weight loss has been a great motivation in continuing this sport.

IF

by Rudyard Kippling

If you can keep your head

when all about you are losing theirs

And blaming it on you.

If you can trust yourself

when all men doubt you

But make allowance for their doubting too.

If you can dream and not make dreams your master.

If you can think and not make thoughts your aim.

If you can meet with triumph and disaster.

And treat those two impostors just the same.

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken

And stoop and build'em up with worn out tools.

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch and toss

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss.

If you can force your heart, and nerve, and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone

And so "hold on" when there is nothing on you

except the will which says to them "hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue

Or walk with kings, nor lose the common touch.

If neither foe nor loving friend can hurt you.

If all men count with you ... but none too much.

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

with sixty seconds worth of distant run.

Yours is the earth, and everything that's in it.

And which is more ... You'll be a Man, my son.
