And The Dam(n) Construction Continues...

It is often said The Narmada projects are the epitome of unsustainable development. Victory for the NBA over the Narmada dams would be a great achievement for sustainability and a reprieve from homelessness and refugee status for several hundred thousand people.

and...

Baba Amte, born in 1914, is one of India's most respected social and moral leaders. Most of his life he has devoted to the care and rehabilitation of leprosy patients. His community of 2,000 patients at Anandwan is known and respected around the world and has done much to dispel prejudice against the victims of leprosy. In 1990 he left Anandwan with the words: "I am leaving to live along the Narmada... Narmada will linger on the lips of the nation as a symbol of all struggles against social injustice."

and

Medha Patkar Said "If the vast majority of our population is to be fed and clothed, then a balanced vision with our own priorities in place of the Western models is a must. There is no other way but to redefine 'modernity' and the goals of development, to widen it to a sustainable, just society based on harmonious, non-exploitative relationships between human beings and between people and nature."

and still...that Dam Constriction Continues....Such is our government and the public that chooses the governments and then chooses to remain silent as long as it is not their houses that are being drowned...Great Democracy we live in.....

Funding Agencies for NGO

In the recent past I have encountered some developmental projects in India that are struggling because of funding problems, at the same time, I know there are several charity funding organizations who have money but do not come across good projects.

Looking up google, I found a comprehensive list of funding agencies at this website. If you come across some organization seeking funding, please pass this link on to them. If you are aware of some funding agencies, please post it here (by posting it as a comment)

In Addition to this, if you have a project that you like AID to consider for financial support, please bring it to my attention.

Meet Dr. Adler

Robert Adler, co-inventor of the original TV zapper or remote control with Eugene Polley, has died age 93 in a Boise nursing home due to heart failure.

Eugene Polley and Robert Adler were two of a dozen engineers at Zenith Electronics Corporation tasked with creating a wireless remote control for the television. In 1955, Polley invented the ‘Flashmatic’, using photocells to transmit information to a television screen, somewhat reminiscent of the infrared technology used in many of today’s lounge room remote controls.

I.T. AND INDIA : Amartya Sen

To Quote Amaryta Sen "Some admirations come from near, others from very far. My respect and reverence for the IT industry in general and the extraordinarily dynamic and triumphant Indian IT industry in particular have come, by necessity, from some distance, since I am a dabbler in things far away from IT services and software. When the invitation came to attend this year's NASSCOM meeting and the leadership forum, I thought that this either indicated some mixing up of my identity ("wake up, wake up," I wanted to say, "I teach non-IT subjects at a university!"), or alternatively, it reflected generous interest of NASSCOM leaders to reach out (or as my students say, "hang out") beyond their principality" ...read more

Save RTI Campaign - Bihar RTI Helpline Launch

When the BPO call centers are buzzing with businesses in Gurgoan and Banglore, one new call center is humbly set out to create a revolution -- in a place which will probably come last to your mind in IT hotlist -- Patna. This new call center, unlike others centers, which are supporting foreign businesses, will be serving ordinary citizens of Bihar. Aptly named "Jankari", this call center will help rural population of Bihar to file Right To Information [RTI] applications and get their necessary information from all Government departments of Bihar.

RTI act 2005 is one of the best and most progressive acts of Independent India. The power that RTI gives to a common man to question any government department on the particulars of any Individual or Public cases is astounding. People from different platforms have agreed on possibilities of how RTI could change the future of India by reducing corruption and facilitating proper functioning of Government system. All said, understanding and filing RTI applications are still unreachable to the huge rural population and the Government, and Bureaucracy, are not taking proper efforts to educate them; the hopes that they will do so in future is also dull.
In this situation, Bihar Government, committed to promote RTI among common man has introduced this novel idea of RTI call center. Jankari, as it is called, is like any call center, where professionals will be available from 9 AM to 6 PM to take calls on two different lines: 1. Information line and 2. Application line. While the people can use the Information line - free of cost -- to ask any general questions on RTI, Application line can be used to file a RTI application, with a cost of Rs.10, which is added to the telephone bill of the applicant.
This novel program created in Partnership with Parivartan, lead by Arvind Kejriwal, is very unique. Advantage for the common man in using this facility is that he need not only know how and where to file his application but also not have writing abilities. A wonderful awareness video created by Manish Sisodia, Vaibhav and rest of the team, shows a 'Aam Aadmi' from rural village of Bihar calling to explain that his ration card has not been issued for over 6 months; Call center professional explains him that she could help him in filing a RTI application to the Public Information Officer [PIO] of the respective department. She gets his basic details like Name, address and the questions he wants to ask and drafts the application in the computer. She later sends the application directly to the PIO and also sends a copy of the application to the applicant. RTI application fees of Rs.10 is already charged along with the phone bill of the applicant, which also saves significant effort for the applicant in making a Demand Draft or Money Order.
Applicant receives his reply directly from the PIO within 30 days of applying or else he can call the Jankari again to file his first appeal.
When the video was shown in the inauguration function of Jankari, presided by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is also the prime mover behind this idea, it received a huge ovation and warm reception from the audience. Arvind Kejriwal and the Parivartan team, the brain behind this idea, was facilitated by the Bihar Government for providing plans and logistical support to Jankari. Arvind, during his speech, called for continued support for the RTI efforts from the Government and requested people's movement to take this idea to every rural village. He also mentioned the importance of State Information commission's role in this Information revolution. CM Nitish Kumar praised the power of RTI to help common man and requested bureaucracy to act sincerely in providing information and help to the people. He also warned strict action against erring officials and promised continuous support to RTI efforts.

Himesh

Picked from Wikipedia: I find it quite amusing:

In an interview withThe Times of India, Himesh claimed that only one per cent people criticize him, and the remaining 99 per cent love his work. But the reality is something else. For example on Orkut(A popular social networking site) there are more Himesh-hate community than Himesh-fan community. And also the memeber count of hate communities is almost 3 times greater than members of his fan-communities. In this way he is the only singer of Indian film industry who has more haters than his lovers.[2].

Billy Gillispie, Mr. Nice Guy

This name needs no introduction, atleast not in Texas A&M campus. He is the head basketball coach of Texas A&M. more...

I came across a rather interesting article about him and would like you to read, if you like.
