Microsoft fellowship

Microsoft fellowship

G. Kannan,of IIT Bombay is one of the five PhD students who have been selected after a rigorous selection process for the Microsoft Research PhD Fellowships for 2006. Microsoft research India PhD Fellowships in India are aimed at encouraging students to take up research as a career. Each Awardee receives approximately $5,000 per year over four years.

This is a significant step, becuase the government used to provide only Rs. 60,000 fopr phd students. Now atleast doing PhD wont cost you as it used to be before, however there are opportunity costs, still pretty high and return on being a researcher in India are still quite low. Hopefully, demand for researchers will increase in the industry with the MNCs opening their R&D centers in India.

Overall, I think its a trend that I am very happy to see, and happy to share with you.
